For those of you who don’t know, aside from being a beer geek (annoyingly so at times), I’m also a gamer. Additionally, I love Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons and other somewhat stereotypically “nerdy” hobbies and entertainment. As Mr. Wil Wheaton puts it quite simply: Being a nerd is not about what you love, it’s about how you love it.
I love my hobbies fervently. But it’s not enough to merely impart my beer wisdom and expertise upon the universe through writing or chatting about beer, or throw fun board game gatherings at my home, I need to do more. Alas, a few friends put the idea in my head that I should throw my own beer event; a beer event that incorporates both these passions: Beer and gaming. And so the First Annual Post-PAX Pint Throwndown is born.
Rather than rewrite something I’ve already done a pretty detailed job and crafting, here’s the press release I’ve just sent out to the community:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
First Annual Post-PAX Pint Throwdown
SEATTLE (August 8, 2013) – In partnership with and for the benefit of Child’s Play Charity, Pine Box Bar will be host to the first annual Post-PAX Pint Throwdown beer event.
Scheduled to coincide with one of the largest, most popular gaming conventions in the county — The Penny Arcade Expo — this gaming-themed beer competition will highlight imaginative craft beer creations by local breweries. Join nine Pacific Northwest breweries on Monday, September 2, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pine Box Bar to taste some specialty brews to benefit local non-profit Child’s Play Charity.
Attendees will have the opportunity to taste all nine brews and vote for their favorite. The winner will go on to be served on tap at the 10th Annual Child Play Charity Dinner & Auction held in December 2013 in Bellevue, Washington.
Tickets go on sale Friday, August 9 at noon via Brown Paper Tickets for $35.00. Purchase includes entrance into the event and nine 5-oz samples of beer. Additional 5-oz tastes of beer (while supplies last) will be available for purchase at the event for $2.00 each (cash only).
Incredible schwag will be raffled off throughout the evening. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase for $1.00 each (cash only) at the event.
The event will take place in the outdoor patio of the Pine Box Bar with the remainder of Pine Box open for regular business; additional beer and food will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
Beer for this event has been generously donate by the following breweries: Airways Brewing Company – Kent, WA; Emerald City Beer Company – Seattle, WA; Fremont Brewing Company – Seattle, WA; Harmon Brewing – Tacoma, WA; Naked City Brewing – Seattle, WA; Ninkasi Brewing – Eugene, OR; Odin Brewing – Seattle, WA; Silver City Brewing – Bremerton, WA and Snipes Mountain Brewing – Sunnyside, WA.
Pine Box is located at 1600 Melrose Ave, Seattle, Washington 98122.
Media interested in additional information are encouraged to contact Dikla Tuchman, via Twitter @Mulvah or through our Facebook event page. If you’d like to watch an incredibly ridiculous promotional video, you are welcome to do that as well.
About Child’s Play Charity
Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 70 hospitals worldwide. Over the years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.
Now that you’ve got all the details, here’s what I’ve got to say about this event:
GUYS, I’M SUPER PUMPED.
Not only will drinking all sorts of crazy awesome beers from some of your and my favorite breweries be fun times, we’ll be raising bunches of money for charity and celebrating another successful Penny Arcade Expo. I encourage you to buy your tickets as soon as possible, as the space limitations of the outdoor area of Pine Box means we can only hold so many of you lovely folks. Also, the raffle prizes are going to be wonderful and we’ll be holding raffles throughout the evening. So come, stay as long as you want, vote for your favorite beer, buy some other tasty food and beverages from Pine Box and have a blast! Don’t be surprised if some of the brewers show up in cosplay.
While we’re at it, I’ll also direct you back to my post from last year: Beer-Lover’s Survival Guide to PAX, which may help you along throughout the entire weekend. Prepare your bodies, friends. PAX is coming.
Lastly, I’ll give one more shameless plug: If you’re at PAX, Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. (mere hours before the event at Pine Box), I’ll be speaking on a panel at the convention called the Care and Feeding of Your Boardgame Group. Worry not, I will be talking about beer and gaming, as they intermingle and complement each other.
Viva la PAX, beer, and good times! Cheers.
