The beer community pitches in on Earth Day with a sustainable event at Latona Pub

With Earth Day around the corner, the beer community here in Seattle is once again showing just how green it is by teaming up with Feet First to throw a fundraiser for the Seattle non-profit on Sunday, April 22. For the third year running (or walking rather), the Latona Pub has been “kicking the carbon footprint” and transporting beer from brewery to bar without the help of a combustible engine during Earth Week. That’s right; Sunday, volunteers will have the opportunity to haul kegs of beer from Two Beers Brewing in SODO all the way to Latona Pub in Greenlake. And once the beer arrives, the party starts.

Tickets for the event are $20, are available for purchase now and will certainly sell out, so act quickly. All ticket proceeds from the event go to Feet First, “Washington’s only pedestrian advocacy nonprofit.” Your ticket entitles you to a limited edition Feet First pint glass, one pint of Two Beers limited edition Hand Truckin’ Wheat Ale and, last but not least, the chance to schmooze with local craft brewers and passionate pedestrian advocates. Feet First Executive Director Lisa Quinn, Latona Pub owner Bob Brenlin and Two Beers founder and brewmaster Joel VandenBrink will all be present at the event.

About the beer:

Hand Truckin’ Wheat Ale is a bright colored draft with a soft, slightly fruity aroma that is both brisk and refreshing. This beer is a tribute to people powered beer transportation, Mother Earth, and Feet First’s continued efforts to save lives, improve health, and expand economic growth in Washington.

If you’d like to come out to help raise money for a fantastic Seattle non-profit, as well as show your sustainable Seattle pride, come for a pint and enjoy the company of other like-minded beer enthusiasts. For those of you who would like to be more involved with the event, Feet First is still looking for more volunteers to share the load. Feet First staff is working with Two Beers to coordinate the keg transportation on the day of the event. It’s a 10 mile “ramble” from SODO to Green Lake and they need whatever help you can offer (whether it be trekking part or the entire distance). To join the team email or call 206-652-2310 ext 4.

On a personal note, I will be joining in the beer hike and intend on making the entire 10 mile journey. Amongst the many reasons I so passionately love craft beer and the craft beer community here in Washington is the sustainability factor. Craft breweries here and around the world are becoming more sustainable by the day, converting their breweries to alternative power sources, growing their own ingredients, recycling their byproducts and so much more. What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a group of green-minded individuals all engaging in an activity to promote and reinforce the sustainable nature of both causes — pedestrian advocacy and craft brewing — and enjoying some delicious beer while we’re at it. Hope to see you there. Cheers!
